Subject: | Recognizing April 24 as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day |
Each year on April 24, Pennsylvania joins 32 other states and municipalities across the nation in recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Genocide began on April 24, 1915, with the arrest and deportation of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. It ended eight years later after one and a half million men, women, and children of Armenian descent, and hundreds of thousands of Assyrian and Greek descent, were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in a campaign of extermination. Around the world on this date, Armenian communities visit the sites of memorials raised by survivors.
The Armenian people continue to suffer atrocities and ongoing efforts to eradicate the Armenian people, churches, and monuments. By remembering and openly condemning the atrocities committed against the Armenian people, the Commonwealth helps provide the public with a greater understanding of history, demonstrates support for the Armenian people, and reaffirms the need for constant vigilance to prevent similar atrocities in the future.
Today and every day, let us recommit ourselves to making certain that we never forget the Armenian Genocide, and that we always speak out against hatred and atrocities anywhere they occur. |
