Subject: | Eliminating PFAS in Food Packaging |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would limit the use of PFAS chemicals in food packaging. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, are a large, complex group of manufactured chemicals that are ingredients in various everyday products. For example, they are used to keep food from sticking to packaging or cookware, make clothes and carpets resistant to stains, and create firefighting foam that is more effective. PFAS are used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and electronics. My bill would prohibit the manufacturing, distribution, sale or offer for sale in the Commonwealth any food packaging containing PFAS chemicals in any amount. It would also require manufacturers to post a certificate of compliance at the place of business to attest that the food packaging is in compliance with the requirements outlined in the legislation. I am confident that through this legislation, and SB 302, which restricts PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam, we will continue to take meaningful steps to mitigate PFAS contamination, further protecting our health and environment. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this measure. |
