Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 3, 2022 12:39 PM
From: Senator Amanda M. Cappelletti
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing Voter Education Week in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution that recognizes October 3rd through October 7th, 2022, as Voter Education Week in Pennsylvania.

The week of October 3-7, 2022 is Voter Education Week, and encouraging young people to not only register to vote but to also be educated about the electoral process and who is on the ballot is of utmost importance for preserving our democracy through free and fair elections for years to come. About 179,000 young Pennsylvanians turn 18 each year and young people held about 13% of all votes in the Commonwealth in the 2020 general election. Increasing this number will empower youth to have their voices heard and cultivates a sense of importance for staying informed and participating in elections for life.

Schools and other organizations across the Commonwealth should be prioritizing youth voter registration and education because it will ensure that generations to come will be well informed and civic minded. We should be encouraging all schools, colleges, and organizations that interact with young people to hold voter registration drives to ensure that anyone who is eligible to vote has the ability to do so. It is no secret that voter suppression and misinformation are on the rise, encouraging young people to register to vote and stay involved is an important step in combating antidemocratic efforts across the Commonwealth.

Please join me in encouraging increased youth civic engagement by co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize Voter Education Week in Pennsylvania.

Introduced as SR353
