Subject: | Supreme Court Term Limits |
I plan to re-introduce (former HB 1880) a joint resolution to amend Article V (the Judiciary) of the Pennsylvania Constitution. Specifically, I will amend Section 15 (relating to tenure of justices, judges and justices of the peace); and, Section 16 (relating to compensation and retirement of justices , judges and justices of the peace). Under the existing provisions of the Constitution, judges and justices are not subject to term limits, do not state for re-election (rather, they undergo a “retention” vote) and may hold office until the end of the year in which such judge or justice turns 75 years of age. My amendment would limit a justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to serving two 10-year terms. This language also takes into consideration justices who may have already served two terms in office by allowing them to complete the current term. |
