Subject: | Resolution Urging the U.S. Department of Transportation to Ease CDL Regulations |
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution urging the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FMCSA to ease their regulations relating to commercial driver’s licenses and vehicle safety inspections. In my district there are a number of entry level mechanic technicians that work at a Commonwealth certified official inspection station who possess a Category 3 inspection license and therefore have been trained and tested on heavy, commercial motor vehicles. However, a certified inspection mechanic must hold a valid license for each class of vehicle that they are certified to inspect, since a Commonwealth vehicle safety inspection requires a road test. Receiving a CDL has also become a more expensive and burdensome process due to the recent implementation of new FMCSA entry level driver training requirements and stringent CDL regulations. I ask that you please join me in calling for our federal partners to reform, ease, or create exemptions for certified inspection mechanics performing a vehicle road test requiring a CDL. This will help eliminating unnecessary barriers to this all-important work force. |
