Subject: | Authorizing Body Cameras for Parole Agents |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that will authorize State Parole Agents of the Department of Corrections to wear body cameras that are capable of capturing their encounters with parolees. Under current law, State Parole Agents are prohibited from wearing such devices although other members of law enforcement, including sheriff deputies, municipal police officers and members of the Pennsylvania State Police, are authorized to do so. Like other members of law enforcement, State Parole Agents routinely place themselves in harm’s way when effectuating their duties and responsibilities, which include the monitoring of State parolees. Unfortunately, there are times when force, deadly or otherwise, becomes necessary to protect themselves or others from harm. These recordings will provide a degree of transparency that will undoubtedly improve community relations, reduce instances of liability when false accusations are made, and ensure that State Parole Agents are held accountable for their actions. Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation to better protect and serve our Commonwealth and our residents. |
