MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 15, 2023 09:58 AM
From: Representative Pat Gallagher
To: All House members
Subject: Autism Acceptance Month (April 2023)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex, lifelong neurological and developmental disability resulting in impairment of an individual’s ability to learn and develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand verbal, nonverbal, and reciprocal communication.  Currently, 1 in 54 individuals under the age of 21 are affected by autism, a 10% increase from the prior rate of 1 in 59 individuals.

People of all genders, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds can be diagnosed with ASD, however, ASD is four times more likely to affect boys than girls.  There is currently no cure or one-size-fits-all treatment for those living with ASD.

To bring attention to the need for recognition, understanding, and acceptance to ensure all individuals living with ASD are properly and accurately diagnosed and positively supported throughout their lives, I will be introducing a resolution to designate April 2023 as Autism Acceptance Month in Pennsylvania.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to promote awareness and acceptance for individuals living with ASD and their loved ones.
