Subject: | Designating Eid al-Fitr as a State Holiday |
Eid al-Fitr (or “the Festival of Breaking the Fast”) is celebrated at the end of Ramadan and is a major religious holiday for the Islamic community. To celebrate, a mosque may host a festival after a special prayer service. In addition, Muslims perform acts of charity on this day, and many use this as a time to visit family and friends. Pennsylvania has a rich cultural history of diversity and was founded on the principles of religious freedom and tolerance. Given this heritage, it is imperative that we take the time to expand the range of holidays recognized in our state. That is why we plan to introduce a package of bills to officially designate Eid al-Fitr as a state holiday in Pennsylvania. Join us in celebrating the Islamic communities throughout our state by co-sponsoring this important package of legislation. |
