Subject: Expanding Local Funding Options for Public Transit

Public transit agencies such as the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA), and Pittsburgh Regional Transit provide a lifeline for so many people in our state. Local governments know their constituents’ needs the best and recognize that public transit is essential.

However, local governments are limited in their ability to raise revenues to fund public transit systems. This leads to missed opportunities to secure state and federal funding, and it limits how bold public transit agencies can be in delivering reliable and accessible service.

To help address this problem, I will be introducing legislation to expand local funding options for public transit. Certain counties will be permitted to levy a list of modest fees or surcharges to help fund their local public transit systems.

Our local leaders deserve the flexibility needed to help fund their critical local public transit systems to better serve their constituents. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
