Subject: | Insurance Fairness for Amputees Act |
Prosthetic limbs are crucial in replacing as much original function as possible for amputees. Unfortunately, many insurance plans only cover one prosthetic limb per lifetime. Regardless of the reason– accidental damage or just normal wear and tear – when it’s time for prosthetic replacement, amputees can be on the hook for thousands of dollars out of pocket. Despite doing the same job as internal prosthetics such as artificial hips, only external prosthetics are subject to insurance caps. This must change. I plan to introduce legislation that would require insurance coverage of all prosthetic devices and components, as well as purchase, repair and maintenance from all medically prescribed licensed healthcare professionals. Under this legislation, insurers would continue to have the right to designate prosthetic providers. Please consider joining me and co-sponsoring this much needed legislation. This bill was introduced in the 2021-2022 legislative session as HB 2605. The following were previous cosponsors: Benham, Kinsey, Sanchez, McNeill, Guenst, Hohenstein, Schlossberg, Hill-Evans, Delloso, DeLuca, Zimmerman, Samuelson, Howard and O’Mara. |
