| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending the Cosmetology Law of 1933 relating to inspections of licensed cosmetology salons. Currently, individuals that conduct unannounced inspections at licensed cosmetology salons work under the Bureau of Enforcement and Investigation within the Department of State. While these regulatory enforcement inspectors are typically trained in the regulations of the various boards that require facility inspections, there is no requirement that the inspectors have specific knowledge and experience in the cosmetology industry. This lack of knowledge about new techniques, technology and procedures can be extremely frustrating for professionals and small businesses who may end up getting a fine or not passing an inspection due to an inspector not being familiar with the industry. Therefore, my legislation will amend the Cosmetology Law to require the State Board of Cosmetology to appoint inspectors who are licensed cosmetologists and who have been actively engaged in the practice of cosmetology for at least five years to be tasked with inspection and investigation of complaints against salons before the board. This proposal is similar to how the State Board of Funeral Directors and the State Board of Pharmacy operate. I invite you to cosponsor this legislation. |
