Subject: | Designating Eid al-Fitr as a State Holiday |
Known as “the Festival of Breaking the Fast,” approximately 2 billion Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The date of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon to mark the beginning of the new lunar month of Shawwal. The holiday includes two to three days of celebrations, and it begins with a special prayer service at the mosque. Eid al-Fitr is also a time for Muslims to perform acts of charity and to forgive and seek forgiveness. Pennsylvania has a rich cultural history of diversity and was founded on the principles of religious freedom and tolerance. Given this heritage, it is imperative that we take the time to expand the range of holidays recognized in our state. That is why I plan to introduce a bill to officially designate Eid al-Fitr as a state holiday in Pennsylvania. Many Pennsylvanians celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and this important holiday deserves official recognition. Join me in celebrating Islamic communities throughout our state by co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
