Subject: | Sergeant Jackie Seltzer Memorial Bridge |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designating a bridge carrying Route 501 Old U.S. 22 in Hamburg Borough, Berks County as Sergeant Jackie Seltzer Memorial Bridge. Jackie Ralph Seltzer was born on August 26, 1946, in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Jackie graduated from Hamburg High School and was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hamburg. After high school, he started work until he was drafted into the United States Army. He was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. On May 12, 1968, Sergeant Seltzer was the squad leader of a reconnaissance force which was pinned down in a swamp in Phu Loi after encountering a hidden bunker and a large group of Viet Cong. After locating the bunker, Jackie charged and destroyed it with grenades, killing several enemy soldiers. As he was returning to evacuate wounded, he was struck by small arms fire and killed. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. For his valiant service, Sergeant Seltzer was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star of Valor, Valorous Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. I hope you will sponsor this legislation and join me in honoring this fallen hero. |
