MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 8, 2023 03:57 PM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: January 29 to February 2, 2024 as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week in Pennsylvania

I will soon be introducing a Resolution to recognize January 29 to February 2, 2024, as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week in Pennsylvania.

Tax identity theft occurs when someone files a fraudulent tax return using another individual’s personal information in order to obtain a tax refund. This type of theft can also occur when someone uses another individual’s social security number to get a job. Pennsylvanians of all ages are at risk of tax identity theft.

Often times, Pennsylvanians find out about tax identity theft by receiving a letter from the IRS saying that more than one tax return was filed in their name or IRS records show wages from an employer they do not know. We can protect ourselves from tax identity theft by properly disposing of any documents that contain personal and identifying information by shredding bank and credit card statements as well as old tax returns. In addition, we can use firewall and anti-virus software on devices, create strong passwords on websites, and not open e-mails from unknown senders.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this Resolution to continue raising awareness about the dangers of tax identity theft in Pennsylvania.
