Subject: | Designate June 2nd of Each Year as PA Indigenous Peoples’ Day |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would designate June 2nd of each year as Pennsylvania Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Rather than depending on resolutions being filed each year or each session, my legislation will enshrine in statute that our Commonwealth’s Indigenous people will be recognized and honored annually and in perpetuity. Pennsylvania is unique in its Indigenous peoples’ history and heritage. Former State Librarian and Secretary of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, Dr. George Patterson Donehoo, in his book “A History of the Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania” stated “No state in the entire Nation is richer in Indian names, or in fact, in Indian history than Pennsylvania”. Please join me in honoring and recognizing the Indigenous peoples of this Commonwealth; our friends, neighbors, and fellow Pennsylvanians. |
