Subject: | JSGC Task Force on Accessible Public Transportation Efficacy in PA |
An estimated 25.5 million Americans have disabilities that make traveling outside the home difficult. An estimated 13.4 million of these Americans—more than half—are adults ages 18 to 64, the age group that participates most in our labor force. For these residents of the Commonwealth, their ability to obtain adequate, efficient, and accessible public transportation affects their ability to work, access medical care, socialize and perform other functions of daily life. All Pennsylvanians deserve access to public transportation. In order to ensure that this occurs, we will be introducing a resolution that directs the Joint State Government Commission to establish a legislative task force on public transportation efficacy, with a specific focus on the impact of Pennsylvania’s current delivery of services to individuals with disabilities. The task force will then report those findings and recommendations back to the House of Representatives. The taskforce will be made up of representatives from DHS, L&I, PennDOT, public transportation and related authorities, Transportation Network Companies, self-advocates from the disability community, the Center for Rural PA, and experts in disability law and accessible transportation. This group will work to identify barriers to accessible transportation and related services at the local and statewide levels. Please join us in co-sponsoring this long overdue legislation which will help ensure that all Pennsylvanians with disabilities can access adequate and reliable public transportation. |
