Subject: Minimum Bail Requirement for Assaulting a Law Enforcement Officer

Last week, video emerged of a group of illegal migrants violently attacking and beating two NYPD officers. Like many of you, I was shocked and horrified by this senseless act of violence against these officers while attempting to keep their community safe.

What followed, perhaps even more shocking, was seeing the perpetrators walk out of court, released on little to no bail, defiantly raising their middle fingers towards media cameras. Those fingers were not just raised to the camera, but to every law enforcement officer and law-abiding citizen across this country. This blatant disregard of our laws, and disrespect towards law enforcement officers by criminals, cannot be tolerated.

Here in Pennsylvania, we must ensure that our police officers have our unwavering support and any violence directed towards them will not be tolerated. In the coming days, I plan to introduce legislation to require a minimum bail amount of $1 million for anyone charged with assault of law enforcement officer. Alleged perpetrators of this heinous crime cannot be easily allowed back on our streets to commit more violent crimes.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
