MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 16, 2024 11:04 AM

To: All House members
Subject: Reduced Coroner’s Fees for Next-of-Kin

A constituent recently informed me that she lost her daughter to suicide and that the fee for both the autopsy and toxicology report is a combined $600. This presents a financial hurdle for her and many other Pennsylvanians seeking answers about the death of a closed loved one, especially during a time when they are grieving.

Currently it costs $500 for an autopsy report, $100 for a toxicology report, and $100 for a coroner’s report. My legislation would establish a reduced fee schedule for the next-of-kin of the deceased. It would allow coroners to charge no more than $100 for an autopsy report, $50 for a toxicology report, and $50 for a coroner’s report.

Burying a loved one is often heartrending.  While we can do nothing to alleviate that pain, we can help by reducing these families’ financial burden while they seek answers and closure.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as HB2166
