Subject: | Pennsylvania-Ireland Trade Commission |
As you may know, for over 20 years, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has been working with an in-market representative to establish and expand business relationships with companies, both large and small, in Ireland. Through this process, DCED has learned that many of these overseas companies are attracted to our state’s diverse, globally connected economy. They are also aware that several of our educational institutions have “study abroad” programs in Ireland, with many students expressing an interest in learning more about Ireland’s culture and economy. Irish companies have nearly 400 locations in Pennsylvania and provide close to 17,000 jobs here. Pennsylvania imports about $2.7 billion from Ireland, the leading commodities of which are: pharmaceutical products, essential oils, dairy products, and industrial machinery. In relation, Pennsylvania exports approximately $751 million to Ireland, with the leading commodities being: pharmaceutical products, plastics, optical/medical/surgical instruments, and industrial machinery (including computers). To further develop business ties with Ireland, we will be introducing legislation to establish a Pennsylvania-Ireland Trade Commission, which would be tasked with: Advancing bilateral trade and investment between Pennsylvania and Ireland. Initiating joint action on policy issues of mutual interest to Pennsylvania and Ireland. Promoting business and academic exchanges between Pennsylvania and Ireland. Encouraging mutual economic support between Pennsylvania and Ireland. Encouraging mutual investment in the infrastructure of Pennsylvania and Ireland. We wholeheartedly believe that this legislation would help to bolster the Commonwealth’s economy and overseas trade relations. Please join us in support of this effort to enhance business opportunities for companies in both Pennsylvania and Ireland. |
