Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 2, 2024 04:59 PM
From: Representative Greg Scott and Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta
To: All House members
Subject: Designating August 24, 2024, as “Bayard Rustin Day”

Sadly, we often overlook some of the most influential individuals in our nation’s history, forgetting people whose accomplishments shaped our world. Bayard Rustin, the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, is one such individual.

A close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin was instrumental in making nonviolence a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. He founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and participated in the CORE Journey of Reconciliation, which tested Supreme Court rulings barring segregation in interstate travel and later served as a model for the Freedom Rides of 1961. As a gay, Black man, Rustin went on to serve as a champion for gay rights later in his life. Our world is a product of Rustin’s activism, but sadly, many have forgotten his name. For this reason, we are introducing a resolution to designate August 24, 2024, the anniversary of his death, as “Bayard Rustin Day” in Pennsylvania.

We must recognize Bayard Rustin as the influential leader that he was. Please join us in honoring the accomplishments of this monumental figure by signing on to this proposal.
