| Subject: | Recognizing April 2024 as “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month" |
I will be introducing a resolution recognizing April 2024 as “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Having been a caregiver to a mother with Parkinson’s Disease for more than 15 years, I understand firsthand the impact of this chronic, progressive movement disorder on patients and their families. The symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, impaired balance, and non-motor symptoms, significantly affect quality of life. Unfortunately, there is currently no known cause for Parkinson’s Disease, and no cure, therapy, or drug to halt its progression. While treatments are available to manage symptoms, they tend to lose effectiveness after several years. Additionally, complications can arise, affecting at least 50 percent of patients. Although Parkinson's Disease itself is not fatal, its complications can be deadly. Shockingly, between 2017 and 2021, 8,268 Pennsylvanians lost their lives due to this incapacitating disease and its associated complications. To combat this devastating disease, we need continued efforts in research, testing, and education. Improved early detection methods and more effective treatments are essential to stop the progression of Parkinson’s Disease and ultimately find a cure. I urge you to join me in recognizing April 2024 as “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Together, we can raise public awareness and support those affected by this neurological disorder. |
