MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 20, 2024 10:35 AM
From: Representative Benjamin V. Sanchez
To: All House members
Subject: Designating June 2024 as Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the nervous system attacks nerve cell receptors that cause skeletal muscles to contract. Individuals with MG live with chronic muscle weakness, with 15-20% of individuals needing a ventilator to assist with their breathing at one point in their life.

An estimated 14 to 20 out of every 100,000 people in the United States have MG. However, because muscle weakness is a common symptom of many disorders, the diagnosis of MG is sometimes missed or overlooked. That is why I will be introducing a resolution designating June 2024 as “Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to better highlight and lift up those seeking the medical attention they require for this condition.

By bolstering the efforts to recognize and treat this disease, we honor the individuals who suffer from the disease, the health care practitioners who care for individuals with MG, the researchers aiming to improve the lives of individuals with MG, and the countless advocates committed to finding a cure.

Please join me in supporting this resolution to bring awareness to the many Pennsylvanians living with MG.
