MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 13, 2024 09:34 AM
From: Representative Nancy Guenst and Rep. Danilo Burgos, Rep. Greg Scott, Rep. Tim Brennan, Rep. Tarah Probst, Rep. Jennifer O'Mara, Rep. Carol Hill-Evans
To: All House members
Subject: Expanding Access to Free Death Certificates for Veterans

When a veteran passes away, their absence leaves a significant void, and the pain felt by those who loved them is immense. In Pennsylvania, funeral directors can request death certificates with fees waived for a member of the United States Armed Forces. However, an outdated Pennsylvania law limits which veterans are eligible to receive this benefit.

We will soon be introducing legislation to amend the Vital Statistics Law of 1953 to make sure that all members of our Armed Forces are eligible to receive this benefit that they have earned and rightly deserve. Our bill will ensure that members of reserve components, our National Guard, and dependents of all veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable can receive a fee waiver.

Our legislation will clarify discharge conditions required for eligibility and expand the benefit to all branches of our military. This small gesture of a fee waiver is the least we can do to support family members of a deceased veteran in their time of devastating grief.

We hope you will join us in supporting the family members of veterans who served and sacrificed for our country by signing on as a co-sponsor to this legislation.
