Subject: | Gold Star Spouses Day (April 5) |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating April 5th as “Gold Star Spouses Day” in Pennsylvania. Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., represents the spouses and families of the members and veterans of the armed forces who have died on active duty or as a result of a service-connected Disability. According to the U.S. Army, the Gold Star as a symbol for those who made the ultimate sacrifice dates back to 1918, when, in the midst of the World War I, families would place a Gold Star over the blue star service flag in their window to indicate that a loved one had been killed. This tradition continued through World War II and in 1947 Congress approved the design and distribution of the Gold Star lapel button, which identifies surviving family members of those who have been killed. The first meeting of the Gold Star Wives of America was on April 5, 1945, when four widows met in in New York City. To this day, Gold Star spouses play an important role in the lives of the spouses and families of the fallen members and veterans of the armed forces of the United States. Please join me in supporting our Gold Star Spouses. |
