Subject: | Allowing Adoptees to obtain a copy of their birth certificate |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would allow any adult person to receive a photocopy of their original birth record. Under current law, persons are only able to receive a summary of the original birth record which consists only of the names and ages of the birth parents, the date and county of the birth of the child and the name given to the child at birth. Parents can request that their name be kept off the summary of birth record that their child can receive. Adoptees basically receive a piece of paper with typed summary information that may be redacted. It is my belief that any legal adult should be able to view their own vital records without redaction. I have heard from constituents who feel like their identity and ties to their biological family have been stripped away because they are unable to access their original birth certificate. This legislation would enable any adult to receive a photocopy of their original birth certificate without redaction. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
