Subject: | Recognizing May 2024 as Celiac Awareness Month |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing May 2024 as National Celiac Awareness Month. Celiac Disease is an inherited, often debilitating, autoimmune disease that hinders the body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients. According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, it is estimated to impact 1 in 133 people worldwide and about 2 million Americans, including about 129,000 Pennsylvanians.
It is estimated that up to 83% of Americans who have Celiac Disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions. Diagnosis often happens after prolonged periods of ineffective treatment and undue suffering. Raising awareness within the medical community and the public could improve proper diagnosis and treatment and make living with the disease easier. Please join me in helping to increase awareness of this condition and honoring the groups and individuals impacted by it. |
