| Subject: | Combatting Fraudulent Misrepresentation of Government Entities |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation aimed at protecting Pennsylvanians from the deceptive practices of third-party organizations that mimic official government entities. When people are tricked into believing they are interacting with legitimate government entities or websites, they may unwittingly provide personally identifying information to private and partisan actors. This risks confusing members of the public, compromising the privacy of their information, and corroding trust in governmental agencies. This legislation will specifically prohibit entities doing business in the Commonwealth from using any domain name, terminology, or imagery that falsely implies governmental origin or endorsement, or is likely to cause confusion regarding governmental affiliation. Similar to trademark and intellectual property laws protecting against brand theft, entities in Pennsylvania must be discouraged from misappropriating Commonwealth trust for political or personal gain. I urge each of you to join me in co-sponsoring this critical legislation to protect our citizens and prevent entities from misleading the public about government affiliation. |
