INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JANUARY 28, 2003
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of February 2 through 8, 2003, as "Burn 2 Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, According to recent statistics, more than 2 million 4 people are burned each year in our nation, including 60,000 5 hospitalized for burn treatment; and 6 WHEREAS, Children represent more than 35% of all fire and 7 burn injuries and deaths; and 8 WHEREAS, Approximately 75% of all burn injuries and deaths 9 are preventable; and 10 WHEREAS, Fire marshals stress the importance of knowing what 11 to do before a fire starts and learning how to be prepared in 12 case a fire starts in the night; and
1 WHEREAS, It is imperative that all homes have working smoke 2 detectors, and families are urged to establish an escape plan in 3 case of fire and to hold home fire drills; and 4 WHEREAS, Educating the public about burn prevention and fire 5 safety is crucial to saving lives; and 6 WHEREAS, Parents, grandparents, babysitters and older 7 siblings should have a basic knowledge of fire and burn risks in 8 kitchens and bathrooms to ensure children are not at risk; and 9 WHEREAS, The Shrine of North America and Shriners Hospitals 10 join with other burn facilities across the nation in recognizing 11 the seriousness of fire hazards and the urgent need to educate 12 the public about burn prevention and fire safety; therefore be 13 it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 15 week of February 2 through 8, 2003, as "Burn Awareness Week" in 16 Pennsylvania as part of a concerted effort to increase public 17 awareness regarding burn prevention, especially among children; 18 and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That the contributions of the Shrine of North 20 America be acknowledged and the Shriners be commended for their 21 continued support and care for young burn victims.
