INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 1, 1999
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of March as "Women's History Month." 2 WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background 3 have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of 4 our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and 5 WHEREAS, Women have played and continue to play a critical 6 economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of life of 7 this Commonwealth by constituting a significant portion of the 8 labor force working inside and outside of the home; and 9 WHEREAS, Women were particularly important in the 10 establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural 11 institutions in our Commonwealth and across the nation; and
1 WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background 2 served as early leaders in the forefront of every major 3 progressive social change movement; and 4 WHEREAS, Women have been leaders not only in securing their 5 own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the 6 abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial 7 labor movement, the civil rights movement, the peace movement 8 and other movements which create a more fair and just society 9 for all; and 10 WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of women in 11 history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the 12 literature, teaching and study of American history; therefore be 13 it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 15 month of March as "Women's History Month" and encourage the 16 citizens of this Commonwealth to observe this month with 17 appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
