A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating January 2013 as "School Director Recognition Month"
2in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Local school districts and their governing boards
4were established by the General Assembly more than 150 years
5ago; and

6WHEREAS, Public education is the only public service mandated
7by the Constitution of Pennsylvania; and

8WHEREAS, School board members govern individual school
9districts, establish local policies, approve educational
10programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire properly
11certified professional and classified employees and share in
12costs by raising necessary local funds used along with State
13funds to operate district educational programs; and

14WHEREAS, Being an effective school director is no easy task,

1particularly in the current climate of school change; and

2WHEREAS, Today's lay school leaders need to be knowledgeable
3about many complex educational and social issues; and

4WHEREAS, School board service is perhaps the purest form of
5grass roots democratic principles upon which our republic was
6founded; and

7WHEREAS, Local public school directors are dedicated,
8educated, responsible citizens who carry out the truest form of
9representative government in our democracy, volunteer public
10service; therefore be it

11RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
12month of January 2013 as "School Director Recognition Month" in
13Pennsylvania; and be it further

14RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be immediately
15transmitted to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
