A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Urging support for development of Legionville as a national <-- 2 LOGSTOWN/LEGIONVILLE AS A PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL park and <-- 3 historical center. 4 WHEREAS, Efforts have been under way since 1915 by 5 governmental officials and numerous organizations and historical 6 groups around the United States to establish the Legionville 7 National Historic Site in Harmony Township, Beaver County; and 8 WHEREAS, This 22-acre site is of national significance and is <-- 9 WHEREAS, THIS 28-ACRE SITE IS OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE TO THE <-- 10 AMERICAN PEOPLE AND IS the largest unrestored historical site in 11 Pennsylvania to be listed in the National Registry; and <-- 12 WHEREAS, Legionville dates to 1000 years before Christ as an 13 Early Woodland Adena American Indian cultural inhabitation site; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, The Legionville area was the historical capital of
1 the Delaware and Shawnee Indians from 1725 to 1754 and was 2 called Logstown; and 3 WHEREAS, The first Christian religious ceremony in 4 Pennsylvania west of the Allegheny Mountains was performed on 5 this site in 1749; and 6 WHEREAS, Legionville was the site of the Treaties of Logstown 7 of 1748-1753 which gave the Virginia government the right to 8 establish its fort at the forks of the Ohio where the city of 9 Pittsburgh is now located; and 10 WHEREAS, Major George Washington held councils at the 11 Legionville site which helped establish the British American 12 foothold on the Western Frontier and precipitated the events of 13 the French and Indian War of 1755; and 14 WHEREAS, In 1792 President George Washington asked his 15 Revolutionary War General, Major General Anthony Wayne of 16 Pennsylvania, to establish and train the First American Legion 17 at Legionville, the first formal military training camp of the 18 United States Army; and 19 WHEREAS, Original revetments and trenches of 1792 remain, as 20 do traces of the Pittsburgh to Beaver Wagon Road of 1806; and 21 WHEREAS, Establishment and development of the Legionville <-- 22 National Park A LOGSTOWN/LEGIONVILLE PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL <-- 23 PARK AND HISTORICAL CENTER will lend to the preservation of our 24 heritage and the promotion of our economy; therefore be it 25 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 26 of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania support the development of 27 Legionville as a national park and historical center and urge <-- 28 Congress and the President to appropriate the necessary funds 29 for this purpose; and be it further LOGSTOWN/LEGIONVILLE AS A <-- 30 PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL PARK AND HISTORICAL CENTER; AND BE IT 20010H0027R2337 - 2 -
1 FURTHER 2 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 3 THE GOVERNOR, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, the presiding <-- 4 officers of each house of Congress and to each member of 5 Congress from Pennsylvania TO URGE THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE <-- 6 DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOGSTOWN/LEGIONVILLE PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL 7 PARK AND HISTORICAL CENTER.
