        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 9, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing March 1999 as "National Women's History Month" and
     2     March 8, 1999, as "International Women's Day" in
     3     Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, An unbiased look at women's role in history clearly
     5  shows that thousands of women did not suffer from lack of
     6  courage, commitment or conviction; and
     7     WHEREAS, Since the formation of the American colonies,
     8  thousands of Pennsylvania women have been in the forefront for
     9  the benefit of all generations to come; and
    10     WHEREAS, By telling history in ways to include and appreciate
    11  the accomplishments and stories of women who made a difference,

     1  a treasure chest of historical information can be opened to
     2  benefit all who read it; and
     3     WHEREAS, Dispelling the stereotypes helps to teach people of
     4  all ages that limited roles typically ascribed to women are no
     5  longer acceptable; and
     6     WHEREAS, Women have played integral roles in all aspects of
     7  Pennsylvania and United States history since before the American
     8  Revolution; and
     9     WHEREAS, Leadership, steadfastness and creativity are
    10  embodied in the business and social acumen demonstrated by women
    11  as we have moved along the path of progress toward the 21st
    12  century; and
    13     WHEREAS, In 1989 the Congress of the United States declared
    14  the month of March as "National Women's History Month"; and
    15     WHEREAS, Since the turn of the century, March 8th has been
    16  observed as "International Women's Day"; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge March
    18  1999 as "National Women's History Month" and March 8, 1999, as
    19  "International Women's Day," and urge all citizens to join in a
    20  celebration of the heritage of women and to observe this month
    21  and day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
