        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 7, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of March 2007 as "Latino Health Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Currently more than 37 million Hispanics comprise
     4  more than 13% of the nation's total population and are the
     5  fastest growing minority group in the nation; and
     6     WHEREAS, Nearly 400,000 people of Hispanic heritage reside in
     7  this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, Twenty-five percent of the Latino population in the
     9  nation has hypertension, as compared with 23.3% of the general
    10  national population; and
    11     WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, 30.3% of Latinos have never had a
    12  cholesterol check, as compared with 21% of the general
    13  population; and
    14     WHEREAS, Only 35.1% of Latinos in this Commonwealth do not
    15  participate in physical activities, as compared with 25.8% in

     1  the general population; and
     2     WHEREAS, There are 14.3% Latinos diagnosed with diabetes in
     3  southeastern Pennsylvania, as compared with 8.1% in the general
     4  population and 8.9% nationally; and
     5     WHEREAS, More than half of Latino children between 2 and 17
     6  years of age in southeastern Pennsylvania are at risk of
     7  becoming obese, as compared with 41.4% of children of the
     8  general population; and
     9     WHEREAS, In southeastern Pennsylvania 26.6% of Latinos are
    10  obese, as compared with 22.8% of the general population; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Medical Society and Congreso de
    12  Latinos Unidos, Inc., are joining efforts to prevent adverse
    13  outcomes, from obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and
    14  cardiovascular disease in the Hispanic communities; therefore be
    15  it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
    17  2007 as "Latino Health Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge and
    19  affirm the importance of all Pennsylvanians' health, and the
    20  unique health needs of Latinos and the opportunities in
    21  addressing these disparities; and be it further
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate all
    23  possibly feasible special attention and resources to address the
    24  unique health needs of Latinos through promising and best health
    25  practices.
