        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 18, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the Borough of Towanda in Bradford County on its 175th
     2     anniversary.

     3     WHEREAS, Towanda was founded by William Means circa 1786 when
     4  he settled in the area on the North Branch of the Susquehanna
     5  River; and
     6     WHEREAS, Means, a boatman, added a distillery, tavern and
     7  ferry to the town, which was the commercial hub of the area for
     8  a considerable part of the 1700s; and
     9     WHEREAS, The town became the county seat upon Bradford
    10  County's organization in 1812; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Borough of Towanda was incorporated on March 5,
    12  1828; and

     1     WHEREAS, The borough was an important commercial, industrial
     2  and transportation center, being connected with the New York
     3  Canal by means of the Pennsylvania Canal and maintaining
     4  significant railways; and
     5     WHEREAS, As a seat of commerce, the borough fostered many
     6  captains of business, including the mastermind of the
     7  Pennsylvania and New York Railroad and a significant developer
     8  of the borough, Mahlon Mercur, who was born in Towanda; and
     9     WHEREAS, The inventor of the fluorescent X-ray screen, Carl
    10  V.S. Patterson, lived in Towanda and established the Patterson
    11  Screen Company there; and
    12     WHEREAS, Consequential political figures from Towanda include
    13  David Wilmont, a founder of the Republican party in this
    14  Commonwealth and a United States Senator and Representative, and
    15  Ulysses Mercur, also a founding member of the Republican party
    16  and a United States Representative and Chief Justice of the
    17  Pennsylvania Supreme Court; therefore be it
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    19  Borough of Towanda on the 175th anniversary of its incorporation
    20  and honor the borough on its outstanding contributions to the
    21  history and traditions of this great Commonwealth.
