INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 13, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing March 2001 as "Women's History Month" and March 8, 2 2001, as "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania and 3 declaring March 13, 2001, as a day of celebration of the 4 women members of the House of Representatives. 5 WHEREAS, An unbiased look at women's role in history clearly 6 shows that thousands of women did not suffer from lack of 7 courage, commitment or conviction; and 8 WHEREAS, Since the formation of the American colonies, 9 thousands of Pennsylvania women have been in the forefront for 10 the benefit of all generations to come; and 11 WHEREAS, By telling history in ways to include and appreciate
1 the accomplishments and stories of women who made a difference, 2 a treasure chest of historical information can be opened to 3 benefit all who read it; and 4 WHEREAS, Dispelling the stereotypes helps to teach people of 5 all ages that limited roles typically ascribed to women are no 6 longer acceptable; and 7 WHEREAS, Women have played integral roles in all aspects of 8 Pennsylvania and United States history since before the American 9 Revolution; and 10 WHEREAS, One hundred five women have been elected to the 11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 1923; and 12 WHEREAS, Women have been elected to represent 32 counties in 13 Pennsylvania; and 14 WHEREAS, Twenty-eight women currently serve as members in the 15 House of Representatives; and 16 WHEREAS, The women presently serving make up 14% of the House 17 of Representatives; and 18 WHEREAS, The women who serve have been recognized nationally, 19 Statewide and locally for their public service; and 20 WHEREAS, The current Speaker of the House has called them 21 "women of courage, leadership and success"; and 22 WHEREAS, Leadership, steadfastness and creativity are 23 embodied in the business and social acumen demonstrated by women 24 as we have moved along the path of progress into the 21st 25 century; and 26 WHEREAS, In 1989 the Congress of the United States declared 27 the month of March as "National Women's History Month"; and 28 WHEREAS, Since the turn of the century, March 8 has been 29 observed as "International Women's Day"; therefore be it 30 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March 20010H0060R0778 - 2 -
1 2001 as "Women's History Month" and March 8, 2001, as 2 "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the women 4 members of the House of Representatives for their service to our 5 Commonwealth and declare March 13, 2001, as a day of celebration 6 of the women presently serving the House of Representatives.
