A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the centennial year of Hershey, Pennsylvania. 2 WHEREAS, In 1903 Milton Hershey, a successful entrepreneur, 3 returned to his birth site and broke ground on March 2 for a 4 modern factory to manufacture Hershey's Milk Chocolate, a new 5 product rapidly becoming America's favorite chocolate treat; and 6 WHEREAS, While his plans to build the largest chocolate 7 factory in the United States were remarkable, Milton Hershey 8 also planned to build a model town that would provide his 9 workers with comfortable homes, a transit system, quality public 10 schools and extensive recreational and cultural opportunities; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, In 1909 Milton Hershey and his beloved wife, 13 Catherine, again decided to benefit others by founding a school 14 for orphan boys which eventually was endowed his entire fortune; 15 and
1 WHEREAS, Since his death in 1945 at age 88, Milton Hershey's 2 legacy has thrived in a constantly changing world: Penn State 3 University Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was established in 4 1963 with a gift of $50 million from the Milton Hershey School 5 Trust; tourist attractions which were developed under his 6 guidance continue to bring visitors to the community and provide 7 cultural and entertainment opportunities unheard of for a small 8 rural community; Milton Hershey School nurtures and educates 9 more than 1,200 financially needy girls and boys in grades K-12; 10 and community residents continue the legacy through their 11 commitment to quality education, extensive recreational 12 facilities and support of the arts; and 13 WHEREAS, A century after breaking ground, Milton Hershey's 14 dream lives on and his legacy remains a constant, vibrant 15 reality: a thriving, diverse community enriched by its past, 16 energized by its present and enthusiastic about its future in 17 keeping with Milton Hershey's ideals, vision and philanthropy, 18 carried forward by active volunteers, caring community members 19 and skilled township leaders; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 21 centennial year of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and commend its 22 ongoing economic success, commitment to philanthropy and 23 unparalleled vitality, all of which make it truly the "sweetest 24 place on Earth."
