HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 92 Session of 1989


        INTRODUCED BY COHEN, HAGARTY, PRESSMANN, FOX, FREEMAN, COWELL,
           ITKIN, MARKOSEK, JOSEPHS, WOGAN, WESTON, RYBAK, BISHOP,
           LINTON AND MILLER, APRIL 26, 1989

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 26, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 10, 1989, as "Israel Independence Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, After World War II, large numbers of Jewish
     4  refugees, uprooted by the war and Hitler's Holocaust, sought to
     5  emigrate to Palestine, their ancestral home; and
     6     WHEREAS, To avoid open Arab-Jewish conflict, the newly formed
     7  United Nations partitioned British-held Palestine between the
     8  Arabs and the Jews; and
     9     WHEREAS, On May 13, 1948, the British completed their
    10  withdrawal by lifting their naval blockade and Jewish emigres
    11  streamed into Palestine; and
    12     WHEREAS, On May 14, 1948, with the British gone, the State of
    13  Israel was proclaimed; and
    14     WHEREAS, Although Israel has been embroiled in conflict since
    15  its establishment, Israel's existence is a continuing source of
    16  pride and inspiration for the 400,000 Jews in Pennsylvania, the
    17  6,000,000 Jews in the United States and many more millions of


     1  Jews around the world; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
     3  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby designates May 10, 1989, as
     4  "Israel Independence Day" in Pennsylvania.
