REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 26, 1989
A RESOLUTION 1 Urging Congress to oppose any increase in the Federal motor fuel 2 tax for deficit reduction. 3 WHEREAS, Some members of Congress have proposed significantly 4 increasing the Federal motor fuel tax as a deficit-reduction 5 measure; and 6 WHEREAS, Such an increase in the Federal motor fuel tax is 7 not in the national interest and will create unemployment, 8 depress business activity, increase costs to all Americans by 9 raising the cost of transportation and seriously limit the 10 ability of the states to generate badly needed highway revenues; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, An increase in the Federal motor fuel tax would fall 13 disproportionately on the nation's poor, on people who use their 14 vehicles in their work and on citizens living in states where 15 travel distances are greater and alternative transportation is
1 unavailable; and 2 WHEREAS, Higher Federal motor fuel taxes would raise domestic 3 transportation costs and make American goods more expensive to 4 produce and would adversely affect the ability of American 5 companies to compete with foreign exporters and in overseas 6 markets; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 8 oppose any increase in the Federal motor fuel tax for deficit 9 reduction and urge the National Economic Commission to find 10 other means of reducing the Federal budget deficit which would 11 have a less harmful effect on citizens, businesses and state 12 governments of the United States; and be it further 13 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 14 the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each 15 member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
