A RESOLUTION 1 Directing the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to discontinue 2 purchases of French wines and prohibit sales of French wines 3 in State stores. 4 WHEREAS, Boycotts are an effective mechanism for economically 5 punishing politically irrational and offensive remarks, 6 attitudes or behavior; and 7 WHEREAS, Since the mid-1960s, the French government has 8 engaged in a persistent pattern of anti-American rhetoric and 9 behavior; and 10 WHEREAS, Philadelphia prosecutors had to overcome years of 11 French opposition to the extradition of the notorious convicted 12 murderer Ira Einhorn; and 13 WHEREAS, The French have condemned the legal system in 14 Pennsylvania and the United States for prosecuting, 15 incarcerating and filing death warrants against Mumia Abu-Jamal, 16 who was found guilty and sentenced to death for his execution-
1 style murder of a Philadelphia police officer, and have in fact 2 named a French village near Paris after this murderer; and 3 WHEREAS, The French provided great assistance to the American 4 colonies in our fight for independence and have, in return, 5 received our assistance in both World Wars and in Indochina, our 6 support in NATO and the United Nations and our continued 7 affection and respect; and 8 WHEREAS, It continues to confound Pennsylvanians, home of 9 many of the veterans who served in World War II and in Vietnam 10 and home of many active-duty servicemen and servicewomen today, 11 as to how the French government is able to take anti-American 12 positions time after time, most recently by refusing to vote in 13 the United Nations Security Council for resolutions condemning 14 Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and Iraqi refusal to comply with 15 United Nations directives and resolutions; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives direct the 17 Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to discontinue purchases of 18 French wines and prohibit sales of French wines in State stores.
