           GEIST, GEORGE, HERSHEY, KENNEY, KIRKLAND, LEACH, MUNDY,

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Calling on the United Nations to take action to help free three
     2     Israeli soldiers held captive by Hezbollah in violation of
     3     international law.

     4     WHEREAS, On June 26, 2006, Sergeant Ehud Goldwasser, Sergeant
     5  Eldad Regev and Corporal Gilad Shalit, three soldiers in the
     6  Israeli Defense Force, were kidnapped in northern Israel by
     7  soldiers from the militant Islamic group Hezbollah; and
     8     WHEREAS, Hezbollah's refusal to return the three Israeli
     9  soldiers or even acknowledge their capture contributed to the
    10  clash of Israeli military forces and Hezbollah in southern
    11  Lebanon last summer; and
    12     WHEREAS, The kidnapping and continued holding of Sgt.
    13  Goldwasser, Sgt. Regev and Cpl. Shalit by Hezbollah is in
    14  violation of long-accepted international agreements; and
    15     WHEREAS, Neither the International Red Cross nor the
    16  soldiers' families have been able to contact the men or to


     1  receive assurances that they are well or even alive; and
     2     WHEREAS, This cruel and unlawful treatment has prompted
     3  political leaders in Israel and the United States to call for
     4  the soldiers' release and for Hezbollah to provide information
     5  about their conditions; and
     6     WHEREAS, American Jewish organizations have undertaken a
     7  campaign to collect 1 million signatures demanding the immediate
     8  release of Sgt. Goldwasser, Sgt. Regev and Cpl. Shalit; and
     9     WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper for this House of
    10  Pennsylvania to take note of the treatment of these three
    11  Israeli soldiers and call on the United Nations to take action
    12  to help end their illegal detainment; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    14  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania call on the United Nations to take
    15  action to help free three Israeli soldiers held captive by
    16  Hezbollah in violation of international law; and be further
    17     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    18  United Nations Secretary-General BanKi-moon, New York, NY 10017.
