        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 19, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Proclaiming April 23, 1999, as "Daniel Faulkner Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Daniel Joseph Faulkner possessed an extraordinary
     4  blend of physical courage and gentle compassion which makes him
     5  a role model and inspiration for all police officers in this
     6  Commonwealth; and
     7     WHEREAS, Officer Faulkner displayed his bravery under fire
     8  when he was killed in the line of duty on December 9, 1981, at
     9  age 25 while enforcing the law, the vocation to which he
    10  dedicated his life; and
    11     WHEREAS, Officer Faulkner's bravery and dedication to law
    12  enforcement is further illustrated by the many commendations he
    13  received during his career as a Philadelphia police officer; and

     1     WHEREAS, The other priority which shaped Officer Faulkner's
     2  life was his devotion to and love for his wife, Maureen, and his
     3  dream of being a father, a dream he never had a chance to
     4  fulfill; and
     5     WHEREAS, Officer Faulkner's kindness and compassion were
     6  demonstrated by his fundraising and volunteer work on behalf of
     7  the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon; and
     8     WHEREAS, Officer Faulkner's love for others was amply
     9  demonstrated by his laughter and his ability to bring people
    10  together and by the large number of people who still treasure
    11  their memories of this remarkable man; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim April
    13  23, 1999, as "Daniel Faulkner Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of
    14  this gallant police officer and as a measure of respect for all
    15  police officers throughout this Commonwealth; and be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    17  Maureen Faulkner, to Thomas J. Ridge, Governor of the
    18  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to Edward Rendell, Mayor of the
    19  City of Philadelphia.
