        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 17, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of April 22 through 28, 2001, as
     2     "Pennsylvania One Call Week."

     3     WHEREAS, As excavators and contractors work to keep pace with
     4  the Commonwealth's unprecedented economic development, it is
     5  important to minimize damage to underground utility lines,
     6  danger to workers and environmental pollution; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania One Call, Inc., a utility service
     8  information center, is key to preventing injuries and damage
     9  when digging; and
    10     WHEREAS, This unique service provides easy, one-call
    11  notification about construction and excavation projects that may
    12  endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines, while also
    13  promoting public safety, reducing underground utility damages,


     1  minimizing utility service interruptions and protecting the
     2  environment; and
     3     WHEREAS, This vital service, which began with only six
     4  utility companies in western Pennsylvania and the City of
     5  Pittsburgh, now serves more than 70,000 contractor members and
     6  1,500 local government, authority and utility company members;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Each year the Pennsylvania One Call System transmits
     9  more than 2.5 million notifications, providing protection to
    10  utility companies, their employees and customers; therefore be
    11  it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    13  week of April 22 through 28, 2001, as "Pennsylvania One Call
    14  Week," and encourage all Pennsylvanians to call 1-800-242-1776
    15  before digging in order to avoid injury, protect our environment
    16  and prevent millions of dollars in damages and remind diggers
    17  that three working days' notice is the law.
