INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 24, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2001 as "Prostate Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Cancer of the prostate is, with the exception of 4 skin cancer, the most common type of cancer among American men 5 and is the second leading cause of cancer death among them; and 6 WHEREAS, In the year 2000, the American Cancer Society 7 estimated that 180,400 men would be diagnosed with prostate 8 cancer in the United States and 31,900 men would die of this 9 disease; and 10 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that
1 each year there are about 10,000 new prostate cancer cases 2 diagnosed among men in this Commonwealth and nearly 2,000 3 Pennsylvania men die from the disease; and 4 WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer increases 5 with age, as evidenced by the fact that 75% of men with new 6 diagnoses of prostate cancer are over 65 years of age; and 7 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African- 8 American men; and 9 WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer 10 are vital to combating the disease, especially for all men over 11 50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family 12 history of prostate cancer; and 13 WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative 14 survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%; 15 and 16 WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about 17 prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and 18 welfare of men; therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 20 September 2001 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in 21 Pennsylvania and encourage all men to educate themselves about 22 the risk of prostate cancer.
