        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 5, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the memory of police officers who gave their lives in
     2     the line of duty in this Commonwealth and recognizing the
     3     memorial services in their honor in Soldiers' Grove at the
     4     State Capitol on May 11, 1999, and in Martinsburg, Blair
     5     County, on June 5, 1999.

     6     WHEREAS, Fortunately no police officers died in the line of
     7  duty during the past year, yet nearly 600 officers have made the
     8  ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of law enforcement within
     9  this Commonwealth; and
    10     WHEREAS, National Police Memorial Day is held on May 15 of
    11  each year; and


     1     WHEREAS, The week of which May 9 through 15, 1999, is
     2  "National Police Week"; and
     3     WHEREAS, The first National Police Memorial Day was held on
     4  May 15, 1982, following a proclamation signed by President John
     5  F. Kennedy, and has continued to be observed annually in memory
     6  of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the
     7  line of duty; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory
     9  of those police officers who gave their lives in the line of
    10  duty in this Commonwealth; and be it further
    11     RESOLVED, That the Annual Police Memorial Ceremony, to be
    12  presented by the Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order
    13  of Police on May 11, 1999, at 12 noon in Soldiers' Grove of the
    14  State Capitol, will recognize and remember these brave men and
    15  women; and be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That the memorial service given in their honor on
    17  June 5, 1999, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, in
    18  Martinsburg, Blair County, be recognized as a fitting tribute to
    19  these heroic police officers.
