A RESOLUTION 1 Commending the United States Navy personnel who intercepted and 2 forced down the plane carrying Palestinian terrorists. 3 WHEREAS, The Italian ship Achille Lauro was hijacked by 4 Palestinian terrorists on October 7, 1985, while cruising in the 5 Mediterranean Sea; and 6 WHEREAS, About a dozen United States citizens were aboard the 7 ship at the time of the takeover, and these persons were singled 8 out from other passengers, threatened with death and mistreated, 9 at least one American was brutally murdered; and 10 WHEREAS, An agreement was negotiated for the hijackers to 11 leave the ship and reach safety through Egypt; and 12 WHEREAS, As the four hijackers were flying from Egypt, 13 heading for Tunisia, their plane was intercepted by United 14 States F-14 jet fighter planes from the carrier Saratoga and 15 forced to land in Sicily, where the hijackers were taken into 16 custody; and
1 WHEREAS, The efficiency with which this mission was carried 2 out brings pride to the American people and sends a strong 3 message to terrorists that we have the resolve and ability to 4 bring terrorists to justice; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the Navy 6 pilots and the crew of the carrier Saratoga for their successful 7 mission in apprehending the Palestinian terrorists; and be it 8 further 9 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be sent to the 10 Secretary of the Navy for transmission to the officers and men 11 of the carrier Saratoga.
