HOUSE RESOLUTION

           R. C. WRIGHT AND MICOZZIE, SEPTEMBER 18, 1989

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, SEPTEMBER 18, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing Congress to enact legislation to address the
     2     problems created by massive oil spills.

     3     WHEREAS, On June 24, 1989, an Uruguayan oil tanker, the
     4  Presidente Rivera, ran aground, spilling an estimated 800,000
     5  gallons of No. 6 fuel oil into the Delaware River; and
     6     WHEREAS, As the oil moves down river it is endangering an
     7  island wildlife sanctuary where there are more than 4,000 pairs
     8  of birds roosting with their young; and
     9     WHEREAS, This spill along with the recent spills in Alaska's
    10  Prince William Sound and off the coast of Rhode Island have
    11  affected some of the more environmentally sensitive regions
    12  along the United States coastline; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    14  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the United States
    15  Congress to enact legislation that would address the major
    16  problems arising out of the transportation of petroleum
    17  products, including the prevention of major oil spills and a


     1  more efficient method of cleanup; and be it further
     2     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
     3  the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each
     4  member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
