A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of May 2005 as "Stroke Awareness Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Every 45 seconds someone in the United States 4 experiences a stroke; and 5 WHEREAS, Stroke is the third leading cause of death in 6 America, killing an estimated 160,000 people annually, and a 7 leading cause of adult disability; and 8 WHEREAS, There are more than 4.8 million stroke survivors in 9 the United States, two-thirds of whom live with moderate to 10 severe disabilities; and 11 WHEREAS, The United States spends an estimated $53.6 billion 12 in direct and indirect costs on stroke each year; and
1 WHEREAS, Stroke symptoms include sudden trouble talking, 2 walking or seeing and sudden, severe headache with no known 3 cause; and 4 WHEREAS, Stroke is one of the most preventable of all life- 5 threatening health problems, yet many Americans cannot identify 6 a single symptom of stroke and many do not discuss stroke risks 7 with their primary health care providers; and 8 WHEREAS, Public awareness of stroke risks and warning signs 9 is essential to prevention and early treatment; and 10 WHEREAS, Prompt treatment of stroke can save lives and reduce 11 disability; and 12 WHEREAS, National Stroke Association observes "National 13 Stroke Awareness Month" in May and urges people to take charge 14 of their health by asking their doctors about stroke risks and 15 adopting healthy lifestyles; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 17 month of May 2005 as "Stroke Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania 18 and encourage all citizens to ask their doctors about stroke 19 prevention and warning signs.
