        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 1, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing June 2001 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The dairy industry is the leading agricultural
     3  industry in Pennsylvania accounting for over 39% of all income
     4  derived from agriculture and generating nearly $1.7 billion in
     5  revenues to the economy of this Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Over $40 million in dairy products are exported from
     7  Pennsylvania annually; and
     8     WHEREAS, There are over 10,000 dairy farms in Pennsylvania


     1  and over 50,000 residents employed in the dairy industry; and
     2     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania currently ranks fourth nationally in
     3  milk production, fourth in frozen dairy manufacturing, third in
     4  butter manufacturing and sixth in cheese manufacturing; and
     5     WHEREAS, Milk is Pennsylvania's official beverage, and dairy
     6  farmers produce over 10.9 billion pounds of milk annually,
     7  nearly 7% of the total milk production in the United States; and
     8     WHEREAS, Despite uncooperative weather patterns which affect
     9  the quality of feed and the condition of cattle, dairy farm
    10  families continue to produce and promote quality products for
    11  the nutritional enjoyment of consumers; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy industry is a delightful source
    13  of pride for citizens across this Commonwealth and the nation
    14  who have the opportunity to view the picturesque farms and savor
    15  the food products; and
    16     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians have celebrated the accomplishments
    17  of the dairy industry during the month of June for over 60
    18  years; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the
    20  accomplishments of dairy farm families and the dairy industry
    21  and recognize June 2001 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania; and be
    22  it further
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call upon the
    24  people of this Commonwealth to celebrate "Dairy Month" and to
    25  salute dairy farm families and the dairy industry for their
    26  contributions to Pennsylvania agriculture and for their
    27  dedication to quality.
