        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Marking the 125th anniversary of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

     2     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art was founded on May
     3  10, 1876, at Memorial Hall in Fairmont Park at the Centennial
     4  Exhibition in Philadelphia, the first great international
     5  exposition in the United States; and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1876 the leaders of the City of Philadelphia
     7  resolved to establish this permanent museum, called the
     8  Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, "for the
     9  improvement and enjoyment of the people of the Commonwealth";
    10  and
    11     WHEREAS, The Museum of Art remained at Memorial Hall until
    12  1928, when it moved to its present site, a majestic Greek
    13  Revival edifice on the banks of the Schuylkill River, where it
    14  is an architectural landmark; and
    15     WHEREAS, The museum's collections, including more than
    16  300,000 objects of art, represent more than 2,000 years of human
    17  creativity by artists from cultures throughout the world; and

     1     WHEREAS, Because of its first-class staff, distinguished
     2  holdings, highly successful exhibitions and award-winning and
     3  popular public education programs and publications, the museum
     4  is a prized cultural resource; and
     5     WHEREAS, The museum plays a crucial role in this region's
     6  efforts to attract tourism and has demonstrated enormous impact
     7  on the region's economy through such exhibitions as "Great
     8  French Paintings from the Barnes Foundation," a 1996 Cezanne
     9  retrospective, "Rodin & Michelangelo" and "Van Gogh: Face to
    10  Face"; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the pride and joy
    12  of museum visitors and students of all ages and will remain a
    13  cultural treasure for generations to come; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the
    15  Philadelphia Museum of Art for its service to this Commonwealth;
    16  and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    18  Philadelphia Museum of Art and join its board, women's
    19  committee, members and staff in celebration of the 125th
    20  anniversary.
