        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 30, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the 13th annual Blossburg Coal Festival from May 25
     2     through 28, 2005, at Island Park in Blossburg, Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Coal was first discovered in the Blossburg area in
     4  1792, and it was of sufficient quality and quantity that it
     5  became a marketable resource throughout Pennsylvania and New
     6  York and became the preferred coal of blacksmiths in western
     7  mining camps; and
     8     WHEREAS, The mining of coal was labor intensive and brought
     9  many immigrants to America to towns such as Blossburg, Arnot,
    10  Morris Run, Landrus and Fall Brook; and
    11     WHEREAS, William B. Wilson, appointed the first Secretary of
    12  Labor when the United States Department of Labor was formed in


     1  1913, was a Scottish immigrant who moved to Arnot with his
     2  family in 1870, built his life around the coal mining industry
     3  and was a driving force in local and National union movements;
     4  and
     5     WHEREAS, The Blossburg Coal Festival is a celebration of the
     6  early coal industry in Blossburg and surrounding areas and the
     7  diversity of the people of the region; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
     9  celebration of the 13th annual Blossburg Coal Festival from May
    10  25 through 28, 2005, which commemorates the significant economic
    11  history of coal mining in the Blossburg community.
